Vote on 7 new Greatest Golf holes

Our second invite to the 2011 Greatest Golfer of the Valley tourney goes to Jim Johnston of Campbell.

He joins Jeff Hapsic of Mineral Ridge as the first two competitors in the tourney all-Valley amateur golf event.

Jim’s name was randomly selected from the golfers voting in our 18 Greatest Golf Holes of the Valley project.

Remember — May 3 officially starts the 2011 Greatest program sponsored by Farmers National Bank.

On that day, we will debut our first of 18 holes hole as selected by the golfers.

We will also open registration for the 2011 tournament, which will play Aug. 26, 27 & 28 at five valley courses — The Lake Club, Trumbull Country Club, Youngstown Country Club, Mill Creek Golf Course and Reserve Run Golf Course.

And lastly — we will announce the dates of our first Greatest Junior Golfer of the Valley tourney — open to boys and girls in the five-county Vindicator area.

As we’ve said before, we’re learning this Greatest things as we go. This is just Year 2.

One thing we’re recognizing for the Greatest Golf Holes of the Valley feature is that we want more holes on our list.

The 60 or so holes that more than 150 golfers have picked from came from a survey of a dozen or so top Valley golfers, including area pros.

But even they can be foggy on some of the holes and courses — like the Tillinghast design at New Castle Country Club.

So here’s what we’re doing:

The hole voting is going to continue through May. (Remember -- you can vote more than once. Hell -- opinions change ... or a hole may have just cost you a match.)

You can also help us add holes to the list.

In fact, we’ve added seven holes this week, including:

• No. 12 Beaver Creek Meadows, a par 3.

• No. 17 Kennsington, a par 3

• No. 4 — Mohawk Trails, a tight, nasty par 4.

We’d like to see some holes from places like Dutch Mill, Walnut Run, New Castle, Mahoning Country Club and wherever else you may play in the 5-county area.

So with new holes to vote on, the chance to add some more, and two more spots to win for the tourney, go vote on vindy.com today.
