Canfield schools get set for August if levy fails in May

CANFIELD
The board of education voted to add a renewal levy to the August ballot, should a levy request of the same millage fail next month.
Superintendent Dante Zambrini said the item will be removed if the 1.6-mill, emergency five-year renewal levy passes in May, but that due dates for the August ballot force the district to make such announcements now.
The 1.6-mill emergency renewal levy would generate $890,000 annually and would not raise taxes.
The board also approved a resolution at Wednesday’s meeting that would allow it to rehire two teachers who were laid off as part of cuts when a school levy failed last November — if two additional teachers announce their retirements.
Zambrini said he expects to have official notice of retirements for two teachers in May and June. There is no deadline for when those retirements that could affect laid off teachers need to be submitted.
The board is now accepting applications for intra-district enrollment. Intra-district enrollment affects only elementary school students in Canfield as there is only one high school and one middle school. Parents who want to enroll their child in the other of two elementary schools can now apply. Forms will be accepted until the beginning of the 2011-12 school year.
