Robber shoots Warren store owner
Staff report
WARREN
The owner of Northend Market, a store on North Park Avenue, was shot in the abdomen and hand about 11:30 a.m. by a man robbing the store.
Mohammad Darwish, 58, was in stable condition Tuesday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown after the shooting, Warren police said.
Though his injuries are not life-threatening, Darwish has other medical issues related to a heart attack a couple of years ago.
Capt. Janice Gilmore said it’s not clear why the gunman shot Darwish because there has been no indication that Darwish struggled with his assailant.
“It appears that there were hardly any words spoken,” Gilmore said. “He [Darwish} had tried to retrieve some items for the suspect and when he turned, he was shot.”
The suspect did make off on foot with an undetermined amount of cash. Darwish was the only employee in the store at the time of the robbery.
Police combed the area around the store looking for a black man about 6-feet 2-inches tall with a large build wearing a red-billed baseball cap, a white and blue jacket and blue jeans, but the man was not found.
If anyone has information regarding the robbery, they are asked to call the Warren Police Department.
