Ohio EPA denies permits to renovate restrooms at Mathews High School

VIENNA — A permit to renovate restrooms at Mathews High School has been denied because the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency wants the district’s septic system improved first.

The renovations are necessary to accommodate seventh- and eighth-graders who will be moved to the high school next fall when Neal Middle School closes at the end of the current semester.

News of the project shutdown upset Ken Wallace, president of the Mathews Board of Education. “The kids are coming and we have to have restrooms for them,” Wallace said.

Superintendent Lee Seiple said halting the project is “hopefully temporary, but the problem is we have to do something with the existing [septic] system.”
