Steering incident prompted recall

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

General Motors, which on Friday recalled 2,100 Lordstown-built 2011 Chevy Cruzes, said Monday there was one reported steering- related incident that prompted the recall.

There was no crash or injury as a result of the incident, and GM spokesman Alan Adler said Monday the steering wheel, in that instance, was not properly secured to the steering column by a bolt.

Adler said GM also tested about 2,000 other vehicles that would have passed through the same assembly station, and those vehicles were tested to ensure the bolt was installed correctly.

Adler would not release the location where the incident took place other than to say it was in the U.S.

An official recall was posted Monday on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website.

In a statement, GM said it will notify owners of recalled Cruzes today via mail.

General Motors sold 50,205 Cruzes in the first quarter this year and more than 100,000 since production began in the U.S.
