Family Video hiring

Family Video, 5205 Market St., will have open interviews for job seekers from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday. The store is looking to hire managers and up to 20 part-time employees.

Those interested are urged to fill out an application in advance, available at any Family Video location, and bring a resume.

Gas up 12 cents

COLUMBUS

Gas prices in Ohio jumped an additional 12 cents in the past week, according to figures from AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express.

The statewide average for regular-grade gasoline is now $3.79 a gallon, 23 cents higher than the average a month ago.

The average per-gallon price rapidly is approaching $4.05, previously set in July 2008.

Alcoa turns profit

PITTSBURGH

Alcoa Inc. said Monday it turned a first-quarter profit on stronger sales at higher prices that were offset by a weaker dollar and higher costs for energy and raw materials.

Alcoa’s first-quarter net income was $308 million, or 27 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $201 million, or 20 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter.

Sales increased to $5.96 billion from $4.9 billion a year ago. That fell short of expectations from analysts, who expected sales of $6.16 billion, according to FactSet.

Stocks weaken

NEW YORK

Stocks closed mostly lower Monday after the International Monetary Fund cut its estimate for U.S. economic growth.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 1.06 points, or less than 0.1 percent, to close at 12,381.11. The broader S&P 500 index fell 3.71, or 0.3 percent, to 1,324.46.

Traders are concerned about the effect of higher oil and food costs on corporate profits. Stocks turned lower in the afternoon after the IMF said that higher gas prices could slow the pace of the U.S. economy and offset a boost from the Federal Reserve’s bond-buying program.
