Crash kills two, injures several others

Staff report

SHARPSVILLE, Pa.

A car accident killed two people and sent a family to two hospitals.

The accident happened around 7 p.m. Saturday on Saranac Avenue in South Pymatuning Township, said Officer Russell Shaffer of the township police department.

Mary Lavoie, 18, lost control of her car on a curve, said Shaffer. Lavoie, who was headed north, crossed the center line and hit an SUV that was traveling south.

Lavoie, of Crawford Avenue in Hermitage, and her passenger, Stephen Meszaros, 20, of Mercer Avenue in Sharpsville, died at the scene, Shaffer said. Lavoie was a senior at Hickory High School.

In the SUV, driver Jeffrey Sposito, 40, of Rutledge Road in Transfer, Pa., and his brother, Arthur Sposito, 49, of Andrew Street in Sharon, were taken to Sharon Regional Hospital, Shaffer said.

Jeffrey Sposito’s two daughters, age 8 and 5, also were taken to Sharon Regional. Their names were not released.

Jeffrey’s wife, Lisa Sposito, 36, of the same Transfer address, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, Shaffer said. She was in critical condition Monday, the hospital said.

Shaffer said excessive speed appears to be the only factor in the accident. He said toxicology reports are incomplete, but there was no evidence to suggest alcohol played a role in the crash.

He said that after the crash, Lavoie’s car caught fire. He said he expects the coroner to rule that the crash killed Lavoie and Meszaros, not the fire.
