YOUNGSTOWN

The Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture is teaming up with Grow Youngstown, The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. and the National Center for Appropriate Technology to offer a workshop on market farming in small spaces from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.

The workshop, Hands-on Urban Farming: Sustainability & Profits in Small Spaces, will begin in Channing Hall of First Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown. A hands-on training portion will be at the Fairgreen Neighborhood Garden, a short walk from the church on Youngstown’s North Side.

Participants will learn about encouraging diversity of plants and wildlife, even in urban areas, to improve the environment by naturally increasing land fertility and minimizing pest problems, among other things.

Other topics to be covered include business planning, site design, bed preparation, planting, weeding and harvesting techniques, tool choice and market considerations.

Registration is $15 for PASA, Grow Youngstown and YNDC members and $25 for all others. For more information, or to register, go to www.PASAfarming.org/FarmBasedEducation.
