Taylor Williams hasn’t always excelled in basketball.

But that’s only because babies are often terrible basketball players. And as soon as she was old enough to play, she started and never looked back.

“My older sister and one of my good friends, our dads started it up,” Williams said of her basketball career. “We ended up playing in a YMCA co-ed league [at a young age] and winning it. So after that, we were like, ‘OK. We’re kind of good at this.’ And we just started progressing from there.”

Williams, a junior at Howland High, hopes she can make the best of her remaining high school career.

“Each year that passes, there is less time to reach things that you want to. As you get older, you just feel more of a need to drive for the success you want. So I definitely can feel that going into next season from the last one.”

The Tigers’ ultimate goal is a state championship.

Williams is proud of the team and knows the future is looking bright.

“I’m proud to look at my teammates and know that every single one of them has just that heart and hustle that we want to be the best in this area,” the 6-foot-1 post player said. “And not just in this area, but the Cleveland area, too.”

So is she going to approach her senior campaign differently?

“I’m definitely going to be a lot more into it,” she said with a big smile. ”There’s going to be a lot more leadership because I’m going to be one of the oldest ones on the floor. So obviously I’m going to look over the rest of the team and try to take on more of a leader or captain role.”

And, hopefully, look down at the gold medal around her neck this time next winter.
