Klonowski's power lifts Penguins to split doubleheader with UIC

CHICAGO

Senior Kim Klonowski went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, including a two-run home run to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a come-from-behind 6-3 victory over UIC on Saturday afternoon as part of a doubleheader.

The Guins lost game two, 11-0, in five innings.

The Penguins improve to 18-14 overall and 1-7 in the Horizon League while the Flames fall to 15-16 overall and 6-4 in the league.

YSU trailed 3-1 after three innings, of the first game, but took the lead, 4-3, with a three-run fourth inning. Junior Haley Thomas began the rally with a one-out single to left field then stole second base.

A single to centerfield by senior Kristina Rendle moved Thomas to third and a double by junior Jordan Ingalls plated Thomas and advanced Rendle to third. Rendle knotted the game at 3-3 on a wild pitch that advanced Ingalls to third.

Klonowski's bunt single plated Ingalls with the go-ahead run after a walk to sophomore Vicky Rumph.

UIC threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning when they put runners on first and second with no outs. Freshman Casey Crozier came in relief induced a pop up and recorded a strikeout to end the threat.

In game two, the Guins were limited to just one hit by Ingalls in an 11-0 loss.

The Penguins and Flames close out the series with a single game today at 1 p.m.
