Coroner identifies man shot and killed by off-duty officer

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The man shot and killed by an off-duty police officer Friday evening was identified by the Mahoning County Coroner’s office as Warren V. Wright, according to Vindicator broadcast partner WFMJ TV-21.

Several calls to the coroner, Dr. David Kennedy, went unreturned Saturday evening.

Wright, of Youngstown, was killed around 6:30 p.m. Friday after he entered Galaxy Seafood on Belmont Avenue and pointed a gun at a worker, police said.

The off-duty officer, who was working security at the restaurant and has yet to be identified by police, approached the suspect and shots were exchanged, Capt. Rod Foley said Friday night.

Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams told The Vindicator late Saturday that the Youngstown Police Department hasn’t officially released the suspect’s name, pending further corroboration from the coroner’s office.

City police plan to release a statement either today or Monday, he said.
