Longtime track official and Boardman Booster member Ron Scott was honored March 26, as a new outdoor girls and boys track record board was unveiled.

Scott, or “Scotty” as he was known by his peers, was an avid supporter of the track and cross country teams. Upon his passing in June of 2009, his family allowed contributions in his memory to go toward the purchase of a record board celebrating the successes of the Boardman teams.

At the time of the dedication, $1,240 had been raised for the board and its future upkeep.

More than 130 guests and athletes were in attendance for the dedication. Jim Fox, a close friend of Scott, opened the dedication by introducing Scott’s family in attendance — his surviving wife, brother, and daughter and their families.

Fox recognized contributors to the fund, a number of track officials who were in attendance, and the Boardman Booster members who provided refreshments for the dedication.

Denise Gorski, Boardman girls track coach, introduced some 32 track record holders from the girls and boys teams, representing some records dating back to 1984.

Scott’s’s daughter, Kim (Scott) Cumbie, spoke on behalf of the family.

“I hope Boardman athletes will always strive for the impossible and work to break these records. If my dad taught us one thing, it’s that anything is possible,” Cumbie said.

“Mr. Scott was such a supporter of our teams for over 30 years,” Gorski said of her late friend. “We felt it was only fitting that we honor such a special man with a record board in his name overlooking the track where he spent so many hours with our athletes.”
