Fitch baseball team rebuilds pitching
By Greg Gulas
Fitch baseball coach Wally Ford begins his 20th season with the program and his 13th as the head coach of his alma mater. Ford, who spent six seasons as an assistant to former head coach Rich Coppola, is hoping that his pitching will come around early as they hope to improve upon last year’s 10-16 overall mark and fifth-place Federal League finish.
“This team is as young as any team that I have ever had. We’re solid defensively and we’ll hit the ball. Pitching, however, like in any other year, will be the key to our success this season. Our preseason practices have gone well, but getting outside because of the weather has been the real challenge.
Ford returns five lettermen from a season ago, including seniors Dan Spiker (last year’s starter behind the plate), second sacker Ron DeAmicis and infielder Jake Eynon, Also back are juniors Anthony Paris (outfield) and Logan Kane (first base).
An excellent sophomore and freshman class will also see action as well.
The top four pitchers from last season, Chris Miller, Anthony Savko, Josh Foster and Tyler Hartman are gone, but returning to the fold are seniors Sean Mancino and John Michael Valentine, both having looked quite impressive in the preseason.
Kane and Paris will round out this year’s mound contingent.
