Choffin Career & Technical Center will be offering two new programs — exercise-science tech prep and criminal justice — for the 2011-12 school year.

The exercise science pathway includes training in sports and recreational health care. Students who enjoy learning about fitness, athletic injuries and prevention and proper nutrition will benefit from this pathway.

Students in exercise science will study human anatomy and physiology, health appraisal and fitness testing, exercise programming, nutrition and weight management, injury recognition and prevention, rehabilitation techniques and safety practices. They will use the fitness facilities available at the school.

Students can continue their education as an athletic trainer, fitness instructor, personal trainer, physical-education teacher, recreation director, in sports medicine, as a physical therapy or nutrition counselor.

The criminal-justice pathway includes training in criminal justice, with a focus on either police science and administration or corrections.

Students in criminal justice will study traffic investigation and enforcement, report writing, crime-scene investigation, evidence processing, private and industrial security, arrest, search and seizure laws, crisis intervention, unarmed self-defense and Ohio’s criminal and traffic laws.

Students can continue their education as a corrections officer, emergency dispatcher, retail/industrial security specialist, store detective, private investigator or public safety officer.

Students can apply to either program before April 15. An application can be downloaded at choffincareer.com.
