Pit bull abandoned in NJ gains worldwide following
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Animal welfare officials in New Jersey are warning people touched by the story of a starved pit bull who was found discarded in a trash chute to beware of donation scams.
The story of Patrick the pit bull has garnered worldwide media attention, and donations have been pouring in from those wanting to contribute to his care.
The dog was found abandoned and near death in the garbage at a Newark apartment building and has been recuperating at a veterinary hospital in Tinton Falls.
The Associated Humane Societies of New Jersey, which rescued Patrick, is urging those wishing to donate to make sure they give to legitimate charities that help animals.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Newark, where Patrick was found, is raising money to build a new city animal shelter.
