A Mahoning County grand jury indicted an 18-year-old man charging him with the city’s fourth homicide this year.
Curtis Jones, 18, who listed a Maplewood Avenue address, was indicted Thursday in the death of De’Vail Fleeton, 16, who was gunned down on the East Side. Jones is in Mahoning County jail on a $500,000 bond.
Witnesses told police that five black males wearing black, hooded sweat shirts and red ball caps chased De’Vail on March 26 from the Plaza View Apartments across Stewart Avenue and McGuffey Road, firing at the teen as he ran. After he fell, the suspects ran back into Plaza View.
De’Vail had been shot once in the back.
Police later identified two of the suspects by name and issued murder warrants for them. Jones was one of those men. Police Chief Jimmy Hughes said a murder warrant is out for a second 18-year-old suspect.
Hughes said an altercation between the victim’s older brother and the same group of men who recently robbed him may have led to the shooting.
