Calif. trial wraps up in spat over Bratz copyright

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Closing arguments have begun in a California legal fight over who owns the popular, multi-billion-dollar Bratz doll line.

The copyright infringement trial in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana has been going on for three months between toy giant Mattel Inc. and upstart rival MGA Entertainment Inc.

Mattel believes MGA conspired with Bratz designer Carter Bryant to steal the idea for the pouty-lipped dolls while Bryant still worked for Mattel.

MGA denies the allegations and has countersued Mattel.

The company says Mattel engaged in unfair business practices and sent gumshoes to spy on MGA at toy fairs after realizing sales of its Barbie doll were flagging.

A jury awarded Mattel $100 million in 2008 but the verdict was overturned on appeal.
