Tony Perone, director of the Youngstown Boys & Girls Club, is the speaker for Wednesday’s meeting of The First Ohio Chapter of the Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health. The program, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the D&E Clinic, 142 Javit Court, offers programs and social activities for children and adolescents.

Mahoning County Family and Children’s First Council, in collaboration with Mahoning County Children Services, Help Me Grow and Help Hotline Crisis Center, is offering a family event called “Strong Families Growing Safe Kids” on April 16 at 10 a.m. at the MillCreek Metroparks Fellows Riverside Gardens.
The event includes educational sessions that focus on parental stress management, positive discipline and child-rearing practices, nurturing and attachment, Internet safety and parenting children with disabilities.
There will also be activity stations for children where they can hear a story, make a craft, play bingo and have an FBI Identikit created.
Resource Toolkits including a free Berenstain Bears storybook on stranger danger, a “Protecting My Body” coloring book, a “My Body is My Own” wristband and resources and tips on internet safety will be available to the first 200 children.
There will also be local vendors who will be distributing information about the supportive services they can offer families.
The event, funded by the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund, is free.

Walk With Me

The Easter Seals and Youngstown Hearing & Speech Center Walk With Me event is Saturday at Boardman Park. Free registration begins at 9 a.m. at the Lariccia Family Community Center. The walk begins at 9:30 a.m. Participants raising $25 or more will receive a Walk With Me T-shirt. Walk With Me will be led by Cody Denmeade, the organization’s child representative. The first, “Cancer 101: How it Affects Women,” is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St. Educational material about cancer and interactive nutrition, and line-dance sessions will be available as well as free hair massages, vendor tables, giveaways and door prizes.
The second event, “Stand Up, Speak Out! Addressing Substance Abuse and Violence in Youth,” is April 14 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Choffin Career and Technical Center, 200 East Wood St. Youth are invited. There will be an interactive session by Harambee, giveaways and door prizes.
