Memorial service

CAMPBELL

Richard Gozur, principal at Campbell Memorial High School, said students had an impromptu memorial service Wednesday for teacher Michael “Mickey” Soroka, 49, who died Tuesday morning. Gozur said once the school learns of arrangements by Soroka’s family, another service may be planned.

Soroka collapsed shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday as he supervised students giving morning announcements.

Speed enforcement

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Police Department conducted its first Speed Saturation Enforcement of the year at Market Street and Ridge Avenue last week.

The speed limit on Market Street in Youngstown, including the Market Street bridge is 35 mph.

The zone was active from 4 to 6 p.m. April 1.

During the effort, 54 drivers were cited for speeding, 13 of those cited were driving in excess of 50 mph. One driver was cited for driving more than 60 mph. Six people were charged with driving under suspension or having no driver’s license. One person was cited for wrongful entrustment of a motor vehicle. One person was arrested on warrants, and two vehicles were impounded.

Charity game

BRISTOLVILLE

A charity basketball game between the Racers and Veterinarians will be at the Bristol High School gymnasium at 6 p.m. Friday to raise money for the new shelter for the Trumbull County Animal Welfare League.

Cost is $5. Donations of gently used blankets and pet dishes will be accepted.

Angels for Animals organization is competing in a nationwide challenge to win $100,000. They are one of 95 shelters nationwide that qualified to participate.

To continue on to the next round, Angels must remain in the top 50 through this qualifying heat. To do that, it needs as many votes as possible on a daily basis. Supporters can access the link below and vote for Angels for Animals on a daily basis through April 15.

People with more than one email address can vote once daily from each email address. After one day, Angels was in the 32nd position.

Monthly breakfast

NILES

The Trumbull County Republican Party will have its monthly breakfast meeting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the community room at Eastwood Mall near the party’s headquarters and Dillard’s. Christopher Verich from Ohio Consumers’ Counsel will speak on how to save money.
