Man from India gets prison term in dating-site thefts
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — An Indian man who admitted bilked thousands of dollars from women he met on Internet dating sites has been ordered to spend 3 1/2 years in prison.
Twenty-seven-year-old Jaitass Dhanoa was sentenced by a federal judge in Philadelphia today after pleading guilty to fraud charges in January.
Prosecutors say Dhanoa, who also went by the name Jay Singh, lied about his citizenship and profession to gain the trust of women he met online. Investigators say he would then steal their credit cards and use their personal information to obtain other lines of credit.
Authorities say Dhanoa ran up about $20,000 in charges on credit cards issued in the women’s names.
