Teacher to explore Valley theater lore

Art Byrd will give a presentation on the history of local movie theaters and how modern filmmaking is changing at 6:30 p.m. April 14 at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW.

The free program will cover how a story is conveyed through film, the history of local movie theaters such as the Robbins in downtown Warren, the filmmaking process and how technology is affecting the movie-going experience.

Byrd, of Youngstown, has won awards as a filmmaker and journalist. After working many years as a videographer and director for 21 WFMJ-TV News, he retired from broadcasting to become an instructor at Youngstown State University. He also has written and produced numerous independent films.

Boardman jazz fest

The 11th annual Boardman High School Jazz Fest begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Boardman Performing Arts Center, 7777 Glenwood Ave. The event will feature Boardman students, including the first edition of the combined seventh- and eighth-grade jazz ensemble and three high-school jazz ensembles. Tickets are available at the door and cost $3 for adults and $2 for students. Senior citizens and children will be admitted free.

Spin to fight cancer

CANFIELD

Studio Oxygen Yoga and Fitness is having a Spin-A-Thon to benefit local charities. Proceeds will benefit Silver Lining and Christina’s Garden, nonprofit groups that help cancer patients and their families.

Spin classes will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 17. The first class starts at 8 a.m., and the last class begins at 3 p.m. The suggested donation is $10 per hour to spin and a canned good for Second Harvest Food Bank. Sign-up is required, and donation money is due Sunday to guarantee a bike. Call 330-518-7691 to register. Studio Oxygen is located in the Hilltop Plaza in Canfield.
