Crews resume search for boaters in New River

BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reducing the New River’s flow to aid in the search for three men who have been missing since their jon boat flipped over in southern West Virginia.

Corps spokeswoman Peggy Noel says water control gates at the Bluestone Dam were closed Monday morning. The action will cut the speed and depth of the water in the search area, which is about 15 miles downstream from the dam.

The three men were part of a five-man group fishing on the New River on Sunday. Their 10-foot-long jon boat capsized.

Two of the men were able to swim to shore, but the search for the other three was called off Sunday night.

Rescue crews resumed the search this morning.
