Bakers have recipes for success

The third annual White House Fruit Farm Apple Dessert Recipe Contest took place March 26 at the farm, 9294 state Route 62, where a variety of apple-based desserts were judged and three top winners were announced. The winners follow:

First place: Lois A. Scharf of Salem for her Autumn Caramel Apple Cake.

Second place: Juanita Taylor of Lisbon for her Apple Crescent Dumplings.

Third place: Ellen W. Conrad of Salem for her Apple Layered Marzipan Torte.

Prizes included apples for a year and White House gift certificates.

Entries were judged on appearance, taste and creative use of apples by Mike Iberis, director of Second Harvest Food Bank; Suzanne Barbati, executive director of OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology; Glenn Stevens, WFMJ reporter and morning show cooking segment host; and Regina Reynolds, WFMJ Today cooking segment host.

All the recipes submitted for the contest will be published in the next printing of the White House Apple Dessert Cookbook.

Entry fees received for participation in the contest were matched by White House Fruit Farm and presented in a check by Debbie Pifer, owner of the farm, to Iberis along with a donation of 70 bushels of apples.
