Valley native to give view into Wall Street in lecture

Derek Penn, a native of Youngstown and current managing director and head of equity sales and training at Pershing LLC, a BNY Mellon Co., will address students and business representatives Thursday in Williamson Hall as part of the Williamson Symposium Lecture Series at Youngstown State University.
Penn, recognized as one of the leading black executives on Wall Street, presents “A Window into Wall Street” at noon in Room 3422. Sessions will also be at 2 and 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Williamson Hall.

Penn is responsible for equity sales and trading for the Trading Services unit of Pershing LLC. He is responsible for Pershing’s international and domestic equity sales and trading businesses, which encompass institutional and registered investment advisor sales, foreign exchange trading, international trading, Nasdaq and Bulletin Board trading, the London equity trading desk and the firm’s New York Stock Exchange operation.
Penn has been at Pershing for five years. Previously, he spent seven years as a senior vice president and head of equity sales and trading for Fidelity Capital Markets, the capital markets arm of Fidelity Investments.
For a short time at Fidelity, he also ran the division’s fixed-income operation. Before Fidelity, Penn ran the international equity trading desk for Lehman Brothers, and has had similar senior trading positions for Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley.
Penn earned his undergraduate degree from Duke University, where he double- majored in chemistry and English. He also earned a master’s degree in business administration from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke.
He was born and raised in Youngstown and attended local elementary and secondary schools before enrolling at Duke. He lives in New York City.
The Williamson Symposium Series is an “executive on campus” program designed to bring corporate leaders to the YSU Williamson College of Business Administration.
