Canfield team nets win

The Canfield High School tennis team defeated Salem 3-2 Tuesday to open the season.

In singles play, Mark Dalvin won 6-2 and 6-1 over Jay Linam, while Tony Ed-Hayek lost 6-1 and 6-1 and Mark Stanislaw fell 1-6, 6-1 and 6-2 against the Salem competition.

In doubles play, the Canfield teams of Will Brown and Jared Hofsess defeated Derek Shasteen and Larry Goontz 6-2, 6-2 and Nick Debiec and Ryan Yankush beat Andrew Pietraz and Mark Fredrickson in 6-4 and 6-2.

Basketball athletes earn recognition

Canfield High School senior Danny Campolito was one of two Canfield boys’ basketball players who received All-American Conference (AAC) Red Division all-star recognition, the other being senior Ryan Abraham. Senior Jake Ferrier received All-AAC “Honorable Mention” honors.

On the girls’ side, senior Cally Wollet and sophomore Sabrina Mangapora earned All-American Conference (AAC) Red Division all-star recognition while senior Kaitlin Kaleel garnered an All-AAC “Honorable Mention” nod.

Additionally, Kaleel and Wollet were selected for NE Inland All-District “Special Mention” honors, while Mangapora earned “second team” All-District and “Honorable Mention” All-State recognition.

Canfield baseball team to play in Cleveland

The Canfield varsity baseball team will play at Progressive Field in Cleveland against Kenston May 7 as part of the 2011 CIC Hardball Classic. The event is part of a promotion on behalf of the Cleveland Indians Charities, which is hosting a number of local high school teams in the event.

On May 6, Kirtland plays Fairport Harding at 3 p.m., Amherst takes on Avon Lake at 5:30 and Brunswick faces St. Ignatius at 8 p.m. Canfield leads off Day Two on May 7 with a game against Kenston at 10 a.m. Ravenna will play Highland at 12:30 p.m. and Berea faces Midpark at 3 p.m.

Mill Creek golf venues now open

Mill Creek Park’s North golf course opened for the season on Monday.

The clubhouse has been upgraded and the snack bar — Hole 37 — has been modernized. Beer and wine are now available.

Also, the par-3 course at the Wick Recreation Area opened Thursday.

The batting cages will open next week, weather permitting.

Mooney’s Vinopal to transfer to Pitt

Mooney High graduate Ray Vinopal is transferring from Michigan to Pitt, according to two sources familiar with the situation.

As a true freshman safety last season, Vinopal appeared in 11 games with four starts, making 33 tackles, including 111‚Ñ2 for loss for the Wolverines, who went 7-6 and lost in the Gator Bowl. Wolverines coach Rich Rodriguez was fired after the season.

Pitt’s new recruiting coordinator, cornerbacks coach Tony Gibson, spent the past three years at UM.
