Students at Hilltop Elementary School got a “ticket to read” during the school’s carnival-themed annual Scholastic book fair. The book fair took place in the school’s library over three days and the children visited the fair during their scheduled library times.
Sue Henderson, Hilltop Elementary School and C.H. Campbell Elementary School librarian, organized the book fair, as she has for the past five years. Members of the school’s PTO operated the checkout during the fair and were available to help the children shop. Parents and grandparents were also invited to the book fair to help the children shop.
“A book fair connects students with books at affordable prices and makes reading a positive experience. Children are more likely to read the books they personally get to choose,” said Henderson.
The students could choose from a variety of books and materials in all reading levels, from picture books to easy readers to chapter books to series books to reference books. The children could also purchase bookmarks, pencils, erasers, pens, posters and more.
The book fair is a fundraiser for the school, with 25 percent of the proceeds going to the school. Henderson uses those proceeds to buy books to stock the school’s library.
“We’re lucky. Our students’ parents are generous when it comes to buying their children books,” Henderson said.
