Members of the Canfield High School baseball teams introduced themselves to the community, family members and friends during the annual Meet the Team March 15.
The Canfield High School baseball teams’ parent booster club, the Diamondbackers, organized the event, which is always held at the beginning of the season.
Players on each team, including freshman, junior varsity and varsity, after some words from their coaches, took their turn introducing themselves, stating their position and the names of their parents.
“We have 17 freshman on our team. It is one of the largest teams we have had. They are all very competitive and we are looking forward to a bright future. They have already accomplished a lot,” said head coach Matt Koenig.
Along with Koenig and Barker are coaches Al Thorne, varsity assistant coach, who has been involved with the program for 12 years; Dan Frazzini, varsity assistant coach, who has been involved in all three levels of the program for 10 years and Josh Dankovich, freshman coach, who is in his first year coaching with the program. Dankovich played first base for the state championship team in 2007.
Parent members of the Diamondbackers provided food and drinks for the team members and attendees to enjoy after the introductions.
This year, the Cards have been selected to play at Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians, May 7 against Kenston High School. According to Joe Reinthaler, president of the Diamondbackers, the invitation was a goal of the program.
“We wanted the team to have the opportunity to play on that field and everyone is excited to see them play,” Reinthaler said.
The varsity team is also playing a tournament in Myrtle Beach in April. The Cards’ home opener is Wednesday at Canfield High School.
