One man is jailed in the slaying of a Chaney High School student, and police have a warrant out for a second man who may have been involved.
Curtis Jones, 18, who listed a Maplewood Avenue address, is in Mahoning County jail on a $500,000 bond. He was arraigned Thursday in Youngstown Municipal Court on a murder charge.
He is accused in the death of De’Vail Fleeton, 16, who was gunned down Saturday on the East Side.
Members of the FBI/Mahoning Valley Violent Crimes Task Force arrested Jones on Wednesday on the South Side.
Police Chief Jimmy Hughes said a murder warrant is out for an 18-year-old second suspect.
“He [Jones] was a suspect from the get-go, but not by name,” Hughes said.
According to reports, the task force responded to a call that Jones had been spotted at a Bonnie Brae Drive home on the South Side.
The task-force officers noticed a white car leave the home. They followed the car and made a stop at West Ravenwood and Glenwood avenues. Jones was in the car.
Witnesses told police Saturday that five black males wearing black, hooded sweat shirts and red ball caps chased De’Vail from the Plaza View Apartments across Stewart Avenue and McGuffey Road, firing at the teen as he ran. After he fell, the suspects ran back into Plaza View.
He had been shot once in the back.
Police later identified two of those suspects by name and issued their murder warrants.
Hughes said an altercation between the victim’s older brother and the same group of men who recently robbed him may have led to the shooting.
De’Vail was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.
