1955: Actor James Dean, 24, dies in a two-car collision near Cholame, Calif.
1960: “The Flintstones,” network television’s first animates prime-time series, debuted on ABC.
1962: Black student James Meredith is escorted by federal marshals to the campus of the University of Mississippi, where he enrolled for classes the next day.

1970: The Youngstown Area United Appeal, lagging in payments from industries hit by the year’s economic slowdown, causes the Community Chest to have to borrow $30,000 to meet the agencies September payrolls.
