JFK claims boys sectional; Poland cruises to girls title

James Capolla shot a 75 to lead the Warren JFK High boys golf team to the Division III team title at Wednesday’s sectional tournament at Riverview Golf Course.
Zach Chaplow’s 78 led Columbiana, which took second. Both teams shot 324 but the Eagles won on the fifth golfer tie-break.
South Range took the third and final qualifying spot for next week’s district tournament at Seven Hills in Hartville.
McDonald’s Troy Dombroski won medalist honors with a 72, while Jeff McKim of East Palestine (74) and Lowellville’s Anthony Alfano (80) also earned individual qualifying spots.
OAK HILLS SECTIONAL
KENT
Western Reserve teammates Adam Smith and Payton Snyder each earned individual qualifying spots at the Division III sectional at Oak Knolls.
Smith shot an 83 and Snyder 85, while Lake Center Christian’s Nat Raymondi shot an 80 to grab the other spot.
No area teams advanced. Gates Mills Gilmour won the team title with a 307, followed by St. Thomas Aquinas (335) and Kirtland (339). West Reserve was fourth with a 345.
Girls Division II
HUBBARD
Poland senior Allison Mitzel shot a 73 to edge teammate Maria Mancini by one stroke for medalist honors and lead the Bulldogs to victory at the Division II sectional at Pine Lakes.
Giana DiBenedetto shot a 90 and Melinda Hannon made 94 for Poland, which finished with a 331.
JFK was second with 379, led by Kelsie Teaberry’s 78. Hubbard was third (385) and Champion fourth (405) to claim the last two team qualifying spots for next week’s district tournament at Tam O’Shanter Hills & Dales Golf Course in Canton.
Individual qualifiers were Mooney’s Amber Bruno (83), United’s Kelsey Baker (87), Jackson-Milton’s Katie Santor (92) and Southeast’s Kelly Fesemyer (95).
