A township man is in critical condition after crashing his motorcycle into the back of a police car. Austintown Lt. Tom Collins was driving his cruiser about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday on Norquest Boulevard when he was struck from behind by Rodney Mumford, 43, who was driving his Yamaha motorcycle. Mumford was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center and was in critical condition Wednesday, the Canfield post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. Collins wasn’t injured, but his cruiser had heavy rear-end damage.
Veterans Day

Liberty Township administration and Liberty High School plan a Veterans Day event at the school at 1:15 p.m. Nov. 11. Military veterans who live in the township are asked to call Kathy Welsh at the administration building at 330-759-1315 if they want to participate. Liberty Walmart and John Young, Liberty High principal, will provide gifts to be given to each veteran.
Scrappers Halloween

The Scrappers and Buckeye Online School for Success will have their 12th annual trick or treat at Eastwood Field from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 26. Children 12 and under are invited to participate. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased at the Scrappers team office at Eastwood Field beginning Monday. Tickets are limited to the first 1,500 children. Parents do not need tickets to attend. Area businesses are needed to participate. Companies receive a free table and banner space in the concourse. Each company needs to provide candy for about 1,500 children. Space is limited and is available to the first 30 companies that apply. If interested, contact Heather Sahli at 330-505-0000 by Oct. 15.

The township’s fifth annual leaf-collection program will be from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 25 through Nov. 18, hitting the four quadrants of the township once per week. Pickup for the southeast section, south of New Road and east of state Route 46, will be Mondays — Oct. 25 and Nov. 1, 8 and 15. The central quadrant pickup, south of Mahoning Avenue, north of New Road and east of state Route 46, will be Tuesdays — Oct. 26 and Nov. 2, 9 and 16. Everyone north of Mahoning Avenue will have pickup Wednesdays — Oct. 3 and Nov. 3, 10 and 17. The southwest quadrant pickup, south of Mahoning Avenue and west of state Route 46, will be Thursdays — Oct. 28 and Nov. 4, 11 and 18. Recycled paper bags will be available at the township hall, 82 Ohtown Road, and the zoning office, 90 Westchester Drive. They’re sold in packs of five for $2 per pack. Girls charged

Police have filed juvenile petitions against two girls in an accident in which one ran over the other. The Aug. 3 accident happened in the parking lot near the Tops Buffet on State Street. Natalie Huff, 17, of New Castle, was riding on the hood of a car driven by Heather Clevinger, 17, of Greenville. She slid off the hood and was run over, suffering broken ribs, a ruptured spleen and a broken pelvis. Clevinger is charged with recklessly endangering another person, and Huff is charged with disorderly conduct, says the Mercer County district attorney’s office. Both charges are misdemeanors. The girls have not been detained, the district attorney said.
