YSU LIVE | Penguins trail 14-0 after one quarter
The Youngstown State football team trails Southern Illinois 14-0 after one quarter in the teams' Missouri Valley Football Conference opener at Stambaugh Stadium.
The Salukis scored their lone touchdown off a blocked punt, with Taylon Hunter returning the ball 38 yards. Making things worse, the block came after YSU was flagged for an illegal substitution penalty, negating a punt that was downed at the 1.
A few plays later, YSU quarterback Kurt Hess was hit near midfield and lost a fumble and SIU immediately took advantage, driving 51 yards in three plays. The scoring drive was capped by an 8-yard pass from Chris Dieker to John Goode.
Both teams missed field goals in the first quarter, with YSU kicker Stephen Blose missing from 40 yards and SIU's Kyle Dougherty falling short from 52.
