The traditional blessing of animals celebrates the life of St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day is Oct. 4. St. Francis is known for his love of all creatures.

Gospel singer

Conference set

The call to those committed to Christian discipleship is to find ways to make God’s invisible heart visible. Christian discipleship is essentially about right-relationship, what we all are called to be about, to form for and to transform for.

Dr. Luisa Saffiotti will lead a conference from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 16 at Villa Maria Community Center about how people in right-relationship can achieve peace, building and justice.

Saffiotti is a peace psychologist and clinical psychologist with degrees from Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania. She is founding co-director of Kairos-Transform, an international collaborative practice based in Chevy Chase, Md., and San Jose, Costa Rica, dedicated to education, consultation and clinical services for groups and individuals focusing on working with religious leadership and formation teams.

Registration fee is $20 and includes lunch. Registration deadline is Thursday.

New concept

Log Cabin Ministries

Log Cabin Ministries, 565 North Niles-Canfield Road, will officially open Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Activities will continue through Sunday, when the church’s first Sunday service will begin at 11 a.m.

There will also be music, refreshments and various other events.

Log Cabin Ministries, a new church plan through the Steel Valley Baptist Association, will conduct a Bible study at 5 p.m. Saturdays and will have regular services on Sundays beginning Oct. 10.

Terry Snyder of Austintown is pastor. He and Ron Shank of Girard also serve as chaplains of the Truckers Truck Stop Ministry at the Petro Truck Stop in Girard, which is also an outreach of Steel Valley and Log Cabin Ministries. Services at the Petro are at 9 a.m. Sundays and 7 p.m. Thursdays.

Novena under way

National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon, 2759 N. Lipkey Road, began a nine-day novena to St. Therese of the Child Jesus at 7 p.m. Thursday and it will continue through Friday.

Participants are asked to bring flowers to the Shrine of St. Therese.

Refreshments will be served on the last night.
