Canfield woman blankets mission with donations
Neighbors | Submitted.Canfield resident Carol McCormick has been making handmade afghans and hats for the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning County since 1992. Every year she tries to make at least 15 afghans and 50 hats..To donate yarn for this cause, call Lynn Wyant at the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley at 330-744-5485.
Canfield’s Carol McCormick has been keeping folks in the Valley warm for almost 20 years.
Since 1992, she has been making and donating 15 afghans to the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley. Again this year, she made her annual visit to the Rescue Mission with her colorful creations filling the backseat of her compact car. Clients of the mission had their arms filled with handmade afghan blankets and warm hats as they unloaded her vehicle.
“You won’t find any holes in my blankets or hats. They are made to keep you warm,” said McCormick.
Once in the home health care field, McCormick said this is her way of “still taking care of people” since she retired.
It takes about a month to complete each blanket. Her goal is to finish 15 in time for the winter weather and also present the Rescue Mission with 50 hats each year.
She said she’s seen her hats on people in the city and it makes her feel good to know that they are being used.
Carol said she was hooked the very first time she dropped off blankets at the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley back in 1992 because of one homeless man who was so thankful to receive one of her hats.
Carol uses yarn left over from other projects to create her blankets and welcomes yarn donations.
