Poland’s Madison McLemore, a senior in the Interactive Multimedia program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, began the school year on a positive note.

Her new piece of artwork won first place in YSU’s Student Art Competition for Hispanic Heritage Month and is being featured in the school’s Hispanic Heritage Celebration.

In addition to winning prize money, McLemore’s work is featured on posters and programs promoting the event.

Artwork was judged on originality, technical style and skill and reflection of this year’s theme: “Listen to Our Hispanic Voices.”

McLemore said she drew her inspiration for the piece from the image of a salsa dancer. Her vibrant artwork is a mixed media piece that incorporates pen and ink with splashes of bright water colors.

“I really wanted to do something that represented Hispanic culture and something that would be different and stand out,” she said.

McLemore’s work, as well pieces from other submitted entries, was on display at the Youngstown Public Library’s Newport Branch. YSU hosted the Hispanic Heritage Celebration Friday.
