The Department of Defense said remains found in Germany in 2007 are those of an Ohio soldier who went missing in action during World War II.
The department’s POW/Missing Personnel Office said Wednesday that Pfc. James Konyud of Cleveland will be buried in his hometown Saturday with full military honors. He was identified in part through DNA matches with his brother and niece.
Konyud was reported missing Jan. 1, 1945, as U.S. and German troops fought in the Hurtgen Forest along the Germany-Belgium border. The Defense Department said the combat of nearly five months is the longest continuously fought battle in U.S. history.
