Stocks waver as investors seek safety

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are fluctuating in early trading as traders turn to buying Treasurys and gold after the Federal Reserve failed to take any immediate steps to help the economy.

The moves today come a day after the Fed said it was ready to jump in to support growth if needed.

Caution from the Fed has been enough to put a monthlong stock rally on hold even though the central bank did not stray from what analysts had expected. The Fed said the economy continues to grow at a sluggish pace.

The Dow Jones industrial average is up 24, or 0.2 percent, at 10,785. The S&P 500 is up 1, or 0.1 percent, at 1,141, while the Nasdaq composite is down 4, or 0.2 percent, at 2,346.
