Girls cross country team wins EP invitational

The Canfield girls varsity cross country team placed five runners in the top 20 to win the 2010 East Palestine Rotary Cross Country Invitational Saturday in East Palestine.

The Lady Cardinals had 69 team points to outdistance second-place Salem (72) and third-place Poland (77) in the field of 12 teams. Jen Love was the top finisher for Canfield, taking seventh. Emma Lunne (10th), Nicole Tiberio (16th), Jamie Watt (17th) and Katie Tiberio (19th) rounded out the team’s top five. Jillian Smith (24th) and Marla Mariucci (33rd) also ran on the Cards’ varsity squad.

Canfield’s Jon Hutnyan won the boys’ race to lead the team to a third-place finish among the 13-team field. Nick Tocicki (21st), Rollin Bresson (28th), Jeremy Hammond (32nd), Zach Brown (36th), Robby Reed (45th) and Brandon Mirto (48th) round out the varsity team.

Bailey Fischer won and Sydney Miller (4th), Jenny McClune (7th) and Haylee Klacik (9th) also finished in the top 10 to propel the Canfield Village Middle School girls team to a team victory at East Palestine.

The Cards had 33 points to easily win the meet over Howland (100) and South Range (123). Hannah Nischwitz (12th), Rachel Rostek (13th) and Gianna Campanna (17th) also placed in the top 20.

The middle school boys placed fifth among 11 teams. Top seven finishers were Bryan Kristan (14th), Rajan Solanki (16th), Chase Kern (24th), Alex Shaer (25th), Peter Crescimanno (33rd), Tommy Donadee (38th) and Slava Lefoer (46th).

The middle school teams will be back in action today at the Boardman Spartan Invitational. On Tuesday, Canfield will host the Suburban League Championships at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
