Fatal shooting in New Castle

City police and the Mahoning County coroner’s office are investigating the shooting death of a New Castle man.

Melvin Harper, 26, was shot near Wise Guys Bar at 1115 Croton Ave. at 2:12 a.m. Friday, police said.

Harper was taken to the emergency room at Jameson Hospital in New Castle, then to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, where he died at 4 a.m., said the coroner’s office.

The coroner’s office said Harper died of a gunshot wound to his abdomen.
