NYTimes Pulitzer winner to speak at YSU

Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and best-selling author Chris Hedges, former foreign correspondent of The New York Times, presents “Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle” as part of the 2010-11 Dr. Thomas and Albert Shipka Speaker Series at Youngstown State University.

Hedges will speak at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 30 in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center on the YSU campus. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at 330-941-3448.

Hedges was a foreign correspondent for The Times from 1990 to 2005, covering Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans. He writes extensively on war, religion and the conflict in the Middle East and has spent much time in the Palestinian territories.

His awards include the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting for coverage of global terrorism and the 2002 Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism. More information about Hedges is available at www.apbspeakers.com.
