Special recycling event to be Saturday

NEW CASTLE, Pa.
A special recycling event will give people a chance to recycle hard-to-recycle items, but at a cost.The event will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds on Pa. Route 108 in Hickory Township.
The event was organized by the Lawrence-Mercer Recycling/Solid Waste Department and Pennsylvania CleanWays of Butler-Lawrence Counties. Its purpose is to collect appliances, batteries, electronics, fluorescent lights, medical equipment, paper, tires and other such items. Terms are cash only the day of the event. No personal checks will be accepted.
One new feature this year is that sponsors will accept gently-used medical equipment for free, including crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, bed rails, hospital tables and reachers.
Some sample items accepted and the fee include: freon-containing appliances,$20; stereo console, $15; VCRs, $6; alkaline, nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, lithium, lithium ion and button cell batteries, less than $1 apiece; lead acid batteries, cost varies; complete computer systems, $25; monitor, $15; floor model printers, $55;CPU, $8; laptop, $5; keyboard with mouse and speaker, $3; small printers, $5; speakers, $2; fluorescent/ high intensity discharge lights, $1 and $2; microwaves, $15; typewriters, $6; bankers box of paper, $1 (no newspapers); telephones, $3; cell phones, $1; tires – from $1 to $5; and console and big-screen televisions,$30.
