49ers to retire Jerry Rice's jersey Monday night
SAN FRANCISCO — The 49ers announced today on their website they are retiring Jerry Rice’s #80 jersey at their home opener against the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints on Monday.
The club will retire Rice’s jersey while at the same time recognizing his induction into the Edward J. DeBartolo, Sr. 49ers Hall of Fame for his outstanding achievements and contributions to the 49ers organization during halftime of the Monday night game.
Rice’s official induction will take place Saturday evening during an exclusive red carpet event at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, the website says.
During Monday’s pregame ceremonies, the 49ers also will recognize Rice as the game’s honorary team captain and formally presen him with his Pro Football Hall of Fame ring with a presentation from Steve Perry, the executive director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
