1814: Francis Scott Key writes a poem after witnessing how Fort McHenry in Maryland had endured a night of British bombardment during the War of 1812; that poem, “Defence of Fort McHenry,” later becomes the lyrics to “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

1901: President William McKinley dies in Buffalo, N.Y., of gunshot wounds inflicted by an assassin. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt succeeds him.

1948: A groundbreaking ceremony takes place in New York at the site of the United Nations’ world headquarters.

1960: Representatives of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela conclude a conference in Baghdad where they had created the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC.

1982: Princess Grace of Monaco, formerly actress Grace Kelly, dies at age 52 of injuries from a car crash the day before.

Lebanon’s president-elect, Bashir Gemayel, is killed by a bomb.

1985: Shiite Muslim kidnappers in Lebanon releases the Rev. Benjamin Weir after holding him captive for 16 months.

The Western Reserve Classic Charity Horse Show opens with a parade through Downtown Warren to Perkins Park.

Youngstown Mayor Patrick J. Ungaro recommends that the city restore two-way traffic to Federal Plaza West, which is one-way.

1970: The Pennsylvania Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fire that destroyed two business buildings in downtown New Castle, damaged three others and injured 12 people. Damage is estimated at $400,000.

Lisbon Mayor Clyde B. Pike, 67, dies in Community Hospital West, Salem, after suffering a heart attack while a passenger in a small plane over Salem Air Park.

1960: Ted Von Schullick and Joseph Zitnik, juniors in the school of business administration, are named cochairmen of the 20th annual Youngstown University Homecoming.

Seventeen new polio cases, a new high for the year, are reported to the Ohio Health Department, none from Mahoning County, but two from Trumbull.

1935: Six hundred members of Al Sirat Grotto of Cleveland, the largest Grotto in the world, arrive in Youngstown for the Ohio State Grotto convention. Thousands of area residents watch the Grotto parade throughout downtown Youngstown.

C.W. Deibel, former theater operator and well known in sports in Youngstown, is the U.S. senior golfing champion, turning in one of the lowest scores in the 31-year history of the national tournament. He shoots 153 on 36 holes at the Apiwanis Club at Rye, N.Y., 10 strokes better than his closest competition.
