YOUNGSTOWN

A Mahoning County grand jury soon will decide if a couple found snoozing in the bed of a woman whose home they are accused of robbing should be indicted.

Tyrone Gregory, 32, of West LaClede Avenue, and Rafaelle Daye, 38, of North Evanston Avenue, appeared before Judge Elizabeth Kobly of Youngstown Municipal Court for a preliminary hearing Monday wearing county-issued orange jumpsuits and shackled at the wrists and ankles.

Both rejected their right to have a preliminary hearing, sending the matter directly to the grand jury.

The couple said little in court other than “yes ma’am” to a series of questions from the judge concerning their desire to forgo a preliminary hearing.

Daye, represented by Atty. Doug Taylor, is charged with burglary and faces charges on outstanding warrants for domestic violence and criminal trespass. She is in the county jail on a $75,000 bond and due back in court Monday for a hearing.

Gregory, represented by Atty. Thomas E. Zena, is charged with burglary and faces outstanding warrants for not maintaining water and electricity at a residence in the city. He is in the county jail with bond set at $50,000.

City police were sent to a home in the 2000 block of Summer Street on Sept. 5 after a 27-year-old woman realized someone entered her home by a front window that had been shattered.

The resident found her South Side home ransacked with personal belongings thrown everywhere. She told officers she walked into the bedroom and found Daye and Gregory sleeping in her bed.

The woman called 911 and screamed at the two intruders. She said Daye and Gregory awoke and simply walked out the front door of the house.

Police arrested the pair less than a block away from the house.
