Hetheringtons complete 30 years of volunteer service with NAMI
BETHANY, Okla.
Jim and Carol Hetherington of Bethany, formerly of Poland, have recently completed 30 years as volunteers with the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI). She is the public policy chairwoman and he provides percussion accompaniment for the annual NAMI Walks event.
The couple have been cochairmen of a monthly mental health support group at Bethany Hospital, and serve on the board of directors for the Oklahoma City affiliate.
The Hetheringtons moved to Oklahoma city in 1968 when he accepted a position as an air traffic instructor at the FAA Academy. Prior to retiring as supervisor of instructor training at the academy after a 31 year career, he served as an air traffic control specialist at the Youngstown and Greater Pittsburgh airports and as an air traffic supervisor at the Salt Lake City Airport. He also was an adjunct professor of marketing and management for 33 years at Oklahoma City University.
Mrs. Hetherington graduated in 1953 from Springfield Local High School and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in 2000.
Mr. Hetherington, a 1953 graduate of Boardman High School, graduated from Youngstown State University in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
