NEW MIDDLETOWN

Contracts were awarded for two projects when New Middletown Village Council met Monday.

Council members approved Conner Asphalt Inc. of New Springfield’s bid of $3,033 to put two coats of sealer on the village municipal building parking lot and replace all traffic markings. Officials said two other bids were obtained but did not include prices on all elements of the job.

Council also accepted the low bid of Burke Construction, New Middletown, for $3,200 to replace a culvert pipe and add a catch basin on Maplewood Drive. The only other bidder was Colmes Construction, also of New Middletown, which offered to do the job for $3,900.

Fiscal Officer Carl Flitcraft Jr. reported that the village has applied for a state grant for construction of $170,000 worth of new waterlines on Middletown Road from state Route 170 to Woodland. If the grant is awarded, the village would have to pay approximately 11 percent of the cost.

Also Monday, Police Chief Vince D’Egidio reported that New Middletown will take over as lead agency in the county for the Mahoning Safe Communities Grant. The $50,000 grant comes from the governor’s Office of Highway Safety and funds projects having to do with seat-belt safety and vehicle child restraints. The grant was formerly operated out of Goshen Township.

D’Egidio also reported he was the only police officer in the county to be chosen to attend an FBI leadership academy in Niagara Falls, N.Y., this fall. The academy will cover topics such as ethics leadership, media and legal issues.

Fire Chief Bill Opsitnik reported that the fire department will cooperate with Springfield Township Fire Department to present a fire-prevention program at Springfield Elementary School in October.
