WEXFORD, Pa.

Thiel College’s Kelly Barzak (Howland High) was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference volleyball player of the week after leading the Tomcats to two wins in a home tri-match with Washington & Jefferson and Bethany.

The sophomore middle hitter helped the Tomcats take the early lead in the PAC standings last week, as she helped Thiel to PAC wins over the Presidents (3-2) and a sweep of the previously unbeaten Bison (3-0).

In the two matches, she totaled 27 kills, 6.5 blocks, four service aces and two assists while recording a .489 attack percentage.

She posted a team-high 18 kills in the W&J win.

Gleydura is fourth in prep cross country

EAST PALESTINE

In the high school cross country meet Saturday, Matt Gleydura of Poland had a time of 17:38.6 to take fourth place.

After rain postponed Saturday’s Western PA Sprint Championship/BRP Mod Tour doubleheader, sunshine returned on Sunday allowing the event to be completed.

Winning was Brian Ellenberger-DIRTcar Challenge Series for the Luxaire Heating & Cooling 410 Sprint Cars, Rex King-Rock Concrete BRP Modified Tour, Max Blair-4 Your Car Connection FASTRAK Late Models, Steve D’Apolito-Big Daddy’s Speed Center Stock Cars, and Tim Callahan-M&D Paving Mini Stocks.

There were 121 cars racing over the two days.

FRANKLIN, PA

Tri-City Speedway concluded the 2010 racing season under cloudy conditions for the 14th Annual CSTechnologies Plus Applefest 100, and Brent Rhebergen (Welding Technologies/Shaw Industries E Mods), Rusty Wheeler (E.F. Rogers Plumbing & Heating Pro Stocks), Bill Winters (Horn’s Collision Repair Center Thundercars) and Tim Gillette (Horn’s Collision Repair Center Mini Stocks) captured feature wins.

Brent Rhebergen made it a $3,000 week at Tri-City as he captured the 50-lap Applefest 100 E Mod feature aboard Terry Suppa’s Car Go Auto Parts Pierce No. 4S.

Rhebergen won $1,000 last weekend in the Oil Region Labor Day Classic and collected another $2,000 this night.

The Poland Touchdown Club and the 1st & 10 Alumni Club will honor the 1995 football team at this year’s alumni game, Sept. 24, prior to the Niles game.

Cavs hire Griffin, who was with Suns

CLEVELAND

A person familiar with the hiring says the Cleveland Cavaliers have added former Phoenix executive David Griffin as their vice president of basketball operations.

Griffin, who resigned as the Suns’ senior vice president of basketball operations when general manager Steve Kerr left in June, will assist Cleveland GM Chris Grant, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not yet announced the addition.

Griffin’s hiring was first reported by ESPN.

The Cavs’ front office has been in transition since Danny Ferry left this summer. He was replaced by Grant.

Churchill Downs

LOUISVILLE, Ky.

Churchill Downs Inc. announced a deal Monday to purchase a Mississippi casino and hotel for about $138 million as the company best known for the Kentucky Derby expanded its gambling operations.

The Louisville-based company is buying Harlow’s Casino Resort & Hotel in Greenville, Miss., from a private investment group. It has also added slot and gaming operations affiliated with its race tracks in Louisiana and Florida, and staked out a bigger share of Internet wagering by acquiring Youbet.com.
