1948: Republican Margaret Chase Smith of Maine is elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress.
1993: At the White House, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and PLO chairman Yasser Arafat shake hands after signing an accord granting limited Palestinian autonomy.

1985: James Baker, chairman of the 1985 United Way campaign, warns against complacency as the organization launches a campaign to raise $2.5 million.
Earl W. Brauninger, former president and director of Union National Bank and retired chairman of the board of Bank One of Eastern Ohio, agrees to make restitution of $81,000 on profits made on alleged inside information of Union National’s merger into Banc One Corp. Charges were brought by the SEC.
1970: Charles J. Carney, Democrat, and Margaret Dennison, Republican, file petitions for nominations to the unexpired term of the late U.S. Rep. Michael J. Kirwan’s congressional term.
The Youngstown Hospital Association announces a $16 million major building program that will include a 75-bed hospital for babies and children at North Side and a new tower at South Side.
1960: James P. Griffin, director of United Steelworkers District 26 in Youngs-town, says his unions will back an AFL-CIO endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kennedy to the hilt.
Edward F. Hartman Sr. of Pembrook Ave., Youngstown, files a taxpayer lawsuit to prevent the Mahoning County commissioners from pursuing a lease for office space for the County Welfare Board from Bel-Park Inc. The suit contends that the offices would not be centrally located.
1935: Prominent prophets of the state and national Grotto arrive in Youngstown for the 11th annual convention of the State Grotto Association.
E.D. Hopper, president of the Buick-Youngstown Co., 1021 Wick Ave., is in North Side hospital with a broken neck caused by an automobile accident five weeks earlier, but only discovered after an X-ray picture was make of his vertebrae.
