Ex-coach to speak
HOWLAND
Northeast Ohio native Carl Kokor was a member of the football coaching staff at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., in 1970. He was driving back from a scouting trip when he heard the news that 75 members of the team, coaching staff and crew lost their lives in a plane crash Nov. 14, 1970.
Kokor will be at Howland Branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 9095 E. Market St., at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to talk about his experiences of that tragic time, the team’s 1971 season, and of the events that have followed.
He returned to Ohio in 1972 and taught and coached at Brookfield High School.
He also was defensive coordinator for the first year of the Youngstown Hardhats, a semi-pro football team in Youngstown.
In 1976, he began coaching at Westminster College while still teaching at Brookfield. He is now retired from teaching and coaching and was inducted into the Westminster Athletic Hall of Fame.
Kokor is a graduate of Niles McKinley High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University and a master’s degree from Kent State University.
