Atty. John B. Juhasz Jr., Mahoning County administrator, announces his resignation after two years as administrator. He will establish a private law practice in Hubbard.
Lakeview High School in Cortland could become the first area school to offer a choice of rehabilitation instead of expulsion regarding smoking, drug and alcohol offenses under a new policy adopted by the board.
1970: The city of Youngs-town agrees to issue permits to a Cleveland firm for its coin-operated peep show machines and the plaintiff firm, Automated Vending Co., agrees to drop its lawsuit against the city.
Defending Steel Valley champions Austintown Fitch score a 12-6 victory over the Chaney Cowboys in front of 11,000 fans at the Austintown stadium.
1960: Dr. Howard W. Jones, university president, welcomes the largest incoming class in Youngstown University history, during Freshman Day at Wick Park. About 500 freshmen have raised enrollment to an all-time high of 6,185.
State liquor agents and Youngstown morals squad officers raid four spots over the weekend, arresting six men and two women on liquor and gambling violations.
Anthony “Tony” Vivo, a 1940 graduate of Youngstown College, is elected president of the Youngstown University Alumni Association.
1935: Two hundred and fifty people — many of them steel and rail company presidents and executives — honor Benjamin Franklin Fairless, retiring Republic Steel Corp. executive, at the Youngstown Club. Fairless is widely seen as a future president of U.S. Steel Corp.
Four prisoners escape from the 100-year-old Lisbon jail after cutting a 15-inch square hole in the prison wall.
The Republic Steel Corp. announces $1 million in improvements to its tin mill in Warren, including two breakdown mills with continuous furnaces. The work is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
